I’m a sophomore from Tacoma, Washington, majoring in journalism, as well as environmental science and sustainability. I also have a minor in wilderness studies.
In Bangladesh my focus will be on heat waves and the decline of green spaces that help moderate heat in Dhaka. I am interested in how infrastructure is adapting to growing population and higher temperatures.
I expect these issues to be on display during our trip in May, when the pre-monsoon heat is at its most intense. Extreme heat is becoming more severe in South Asia, driven by climate change and exacerbated by shifting precipitation patterns. Dhaka is a massive urban heat island and I will be looking for examples of what people are doing to combat that phenomenon.
As we travel beyond Dhaka, I hope to focus on biochar, a charcoal-like substance that captures carbon and can reduce soil salinity. Biochar research is in its infancy in Bangladesh, and I want look into how it’s being used.
I have been interested in the environment for as long as I can remember, and the opportunity to report on environmental issues that I am learning about in my environmental science courses is incredibly rewarding and exciting.
Aside from reporting, I am excited to eat as much as possible in Bangladesh. I want to experience all the different flavors and ways of cooking food, and maybe even cook some for myself. I am especially excited for the fish and fruit. Maybe I’ll publish some food reviews during our trip.
