McKenna Johnson

I am a recent graduate of the University of Montana School of Journalism, where I also studied dance, global leadership and French. I grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin, and later Boise, Idaho, and upon returning from Bangladesh I will move to Boston to pursue a master’s degree in publishing from Emerson College.

I love to tell stories. As a dancer, I am interested in writing about the intersection of dance, culture and climate change. This is relevant because later this summer the University of Dhaka, specifically the dance department, will host a conference about “The Climate Crisis and its Impact on the Arts,” with the International Council for Traditions of Music and Dance.

I look forward to learning more about dance in Bangladesh, from kathakali and bharata natyam to folk dances, and about research that is looking to fill the gap between dance and its relationship to climate change.

At UM, I worked as a designer, reporter and editor for numerous student publications, including the Montana Kaimin and Native News newspapers, Byline Magazine and The Oval literary journal. Beyond UM, I’ve worked for Worldcrunch news site in Paris; the Mackinac Island Town Crier on Mackinac Island in Michigan; and I’ve freelanced stories for The Pulp news site in Missoula, Montana, with a focus in arts and culture reporting, essays and opinions.

In addition to writing in Bangladesh, I will manage our team’s social media and website content.
